Name: Zexion Door: Door Pass (Submissive) Canon: Kingdom Hearts Canon Point: After fighting Riku, before being killed. Age: 21-ish Appearance: Here. History: Here. Personality: One thing that is immediately clear about Zexion and shows through in nearly all of his interactions is that with few exceptions, his manner of speech is unfailingly formal. Having spent a significant portion of his life surrounded by people much older than him, Zexion has a bit of a chip on his shoulder when it comes to wanting to come across as someone respectable and worthy of being taken seriously, and as such he does his best to cultivate a dignified, reserved persona. In most cases he succeeds at this, his intelligence and natural curiosity lending themselves well to coming across as an articulate and well-informed individual, well-spoken and articulate if somewhat pretentious and smug. This should not, however, be mistaken for genuine politeness. While on the surface he may appear to be the picture of refined, diplomatic grace, it really doesn't take that much closer examination to realize just how thin that veneer is over his incredible disdainful, passive-aggressive streak. There may be subjects and individuals he regards with genuine respect, but these are few and far between, and for most it's easy to earn his disdain. Oftentimes in these cases his strict formality becomes so exaggerated and unnecessary as to loop around to obvious, flagrant insincerity, and on those occasions where he feels he can get away with it he'll be just plain openly insulting, albeit couched in ostensibly polite language. Really, it's more that the ritual of polite conversation is more important to him than actual intent to be polite - he chafes, openly, at not being greeted properly or being interrupted by long-time colleagues, but is perfectly happy (or as happy as he can be, with his diminished capacity for emotions) to trade thinly-veiled barbs with people he clearly dislikes. All that said, it is very possible to push Zexion past the point of willingness to keep up even pretending to be civil, which Riku very helpfully demonstrates, both in killing Lexaeus and in being himself. First, the incident that incites Zexion to truly feel anything for the first time in nearly ten years is Lexaeus's death at Riku's hands. Though he tries to frame his actions as merely tying up loose ends, there's very little preventing him from leaving it lie other than a sense of vengeance - a trait that's highlighted further in the name of his primary weapon (the Book of Retribution) and in many of his in-battle voice lines both in Re: Chain of Memories and 358/2 Days referencing concepts of forgiveness and punishment. This goes yet another step further in that after his initial attempt to force Riku into a state of despair by impersonating his best friend fails, Zexion seems to snap, berating Riku for his role in the destruction of the Destiny Islands, which in turn reflect his own role in unleashing the Heartless on the worlds to begin with. Combined with his sheer vitriol, this implies a degree of personal vendetta to his actions. The way Xion later experiences the echoes of these events, seeing Zexion and Riku circle each other while speaking each others' lines in unison, further cements these similarities. Whether consciously or not, a part of Zexion's reasons for confronting Riku were a reaction to his own guilt and self-loathing over having had a hand in destroyed not only his homeworld, but countless others as well, in addition to having been made complicit in the (supposed) death of his mentor and father figure, Ansem the Wise.
